CASL’s Member Mariam El Sheikh Honored with the New Investigator Award by the Canadian Association for HIV Research

We are pleased to congratulate Mariam El Sheikh, member of the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver (CASL), for receiving national recognition for her outstanding research. Mariam, a doctoral student in Epidemiology at McGill University , was honored with the New Investigator Award by the Canadian Association for HIV Research (CAHR) for her exceptional oral abstract presentation in Epidemiology & Public Health Sciences.

Mariam’s research focuses on hepatitis C (HCV) and aims to inform interventions for HCV elimination in Canada. Her work is crucial in identifying individuals who are not receiving the necessary care along the HCV care cascade, thereby highlighting systemic failures. Additionally, she examines the downstream effects of engagement in HCV care on health outcomes beyond HCV.

Additionally, she examines the downstream effects of engagement in HCV care on health outcomes beyond HCV.

The title of her award-winning abstract is “Factors associated with not receiving optimal care (NROC) for hepatitis C (HCV) in the Canadian Co-infection Cohort (CCC).” This research is supervised by Dr. Marina Klein and Dimitra Panagiotoglou, PhD, at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC).

Mariam’s dedication and hard work were recognized following her oral presentation at the International Workshop on HIV and Hepatitis Observational Databases in Villamoura, Portugal, in March 2024. Her achievements were further celebrated at the CAHR annual meeting in April 2024.

In her own words, Mariam explains, “My research aims to identify individuals not receiving the care they need along the HCV care cascade, highlighting how the system is failing them, to inform interventions that aim to reach World Health Organization HCV elimination targets in Canada.”
