CASL Endorsement of the Canadian Medical Association’s Apology to Indigenous Peoples

The Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver wholeheartedly endorses the apology issued on September 18, 2024 by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) to the Indigenous peoples of Canada on our journey of reconciliation. This apology is a crucial acknowledgment of the profound and lasting harm caused by historical and systemic injustices endured by Indigenous communities, resulting in detrimental impacts on their health and well-being.

Through this apology, we aim to foster trust and provide support to Indigenous Peoples, communities, and organizations. We also aspire to motivate medical students, physicians, and healthcare institutions to embark on their own paths of reconciliation, both in their professional roles and personal lives as Canadians.

We stand with the CMA for taking this significant step towards reconciliation and healing. Recognizing past wrongs and committing to meaningful actions are crucial in building trust and fostering a more equitable and accessible healthcare system. We stand in solidarity with the CMA’s commitment to addressing health disparities and ensuring culturally safe and respectful care for Indigenous peoples.

Together, we can make a difference and contribute to a healthier, more inclusive future in Canada for all.

Sincerely,

CASL Executive Committee
