Dr. Chris Rose’s Hepatic Hike Across Canada as the CASL/CLF Visiting Professor 2023

Being awarded the CASL/CLF Visiting Professorship provided me the opportunity to travel across Canada and present my research program. I have a vested interest in deciphering the pathophysiological pathways involved in developing cerebral complications associated with chronic liver disease: why is it when the liver fails, the brain fails. In turn, the development of novel therapeutic approaches to help implement precision therapy and improve management for patients suffering from cerebral complications pre- and post-liver transplantation is the ultimate goal.

As well as visiting established colleagues, The CASL/CLF Visiting Professorship also allowed me to meet new alliances and thereby increase my research network across Canada. I am proud and thrilled to have been able to visit 11 different cities, and present at either the university, hospital, university hospital and/or research institution (see map below).

Since translational research is the primary objective of my research program, my presentation catered to both fundamental and clinical scientists. While visiting 11 different centers, I was able to increase my awareness and clearly appreciate the quality research taking place across Canada. I was also pleased to have had some excellent conversations with students, residents, researchers, clinical scientists, hepatologists, surgeons and neuropsychologists. It was an exceptional experience. Every time I flew out of a city, I was more educated and knowledgeable than when I flew in.

I am very honored to have received the CASL/CLF Professorship award and in addition to being extremely grateful to CASL and CLF, I am also especially thankful to all those during my visits who took the time to listen to my talk, to ask thought-provoking questions, to converse in scientific dialogues and to those who hosted me (whether it was breakfast, lunch, dinner or coffee).

Thank you.
Looking back at my journey, I am extremely lucky to have realized this memorable experience.
