Between the gaps: A cross-sectional survey of healthcare providers exploring prescription drug coverage barriers to accessing STBBI treatment (Ethics ID: H25-00503)

Why your input matters:

Many of the populations most at risk for STBBIs – including people who use drugs, individuals experiencing homelessness or housing instability, people with experiences of incarceration, Indigenous peoples, and newcomers to Canada – also face systemic barriers to accessing timely and affordable treatment. One of the most persistent barriers is difficulty obtaining or qualifying for prescription drug coverage. Your responses and involvement in this study will help us to better understand the challenges that healthcare providers face when supporting their clients to access STBBI treatment and to advocate for improved access.

Participation details:

  • Estimated time: 10-15 minutes
  • Eligibility: Canadian healthcare providers working with underserved or priority populations
  • Incentive: Respondents may enter a draw to win one of ten $50 gift cards to Canadian retailers
  • Confidentiality: This survey will ask for information about professional role and practice area, but there will be no questions asking for identifying information about clients. Data will be stored securely on an encrypted server hosted by the BC Provincial Health Services Authority, with access limited to the approved study team.

Sharing the results:

Findings and results will be published on the STBBI Pathways website (www.STBBIpathways.ca) and submitted to peer-reviewed journals. We will also share key insights with providers and community-based organizations via webinars and knowledge updates.

CASL HEPATIC HIGHLIGHTS & MEMBER INSIGHTS

In Memoriam: Professor Jaume Bosch (1947–2025)

A giant in both humanity and science, Jaume was an extraordinary mentor and role model to countless physicians and researchers in the liver community. He brought people together across borders — of country, discipline, and perspective — always with humility, grace, and brilliance.

His impact knew no borders — and neither does the gratitude we feel for having known him.

Giada Sebastiani, CASL President-Elect

The global hepatology community mourns the passing of Professor Jaume Bosch, a pioneering clinician-scientist, educator, and leader whose work transformed the field of liver disease research and care. Born in Girona, Catalonia, in 1947, Professor Bosch dedicated over five decades to advancing the understanding and treatment of portal hypertension and liver disease.

A graduate of the University of Barcelona Medical School, he trained at Yale University under Professor Roberto Groszmann, a collaboration that shaped his lifelong research into hepatic hemodynamics. Upon returning to Barcelona, he established one of the world’s most influential laboratories in portal hypertension, mentoring generations of hepatologists and authoring over 400 peer-reviewed publications.

Professor Bosch’s legacy includes groundbreaking work in the management of variceal bleeding, non-invasive portal pressure measurement, and the use of statins in liver disease. His contributions have directly improved the lives of countless patients worldwide.

In recognition of his extraordinary impact, in 2012 Professor Bosch was awarded the CASL Gold Medal Award by the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver, honoring his outstanding contributions to liver research and international collaboration to the Canadian liver community.

Beyond his scientific achievements, Professor Bosch was known for his humility, generosity, and dedication to mentorship. He leaves behind a legacy of excellence, compassion, and enduring influence in hepatology.

CASL is excited to announce that Dr. Scott Fung has been nominated as the CASL Visiting Professor for 2025/2026.

Dr. Scott Fung is an Associate Professor in Gastroenterology at the University of Toronto and a hepatologist at Toronto General Hospital, UHN. He completed his medical degree and specialty training at the University of Toronto, with certification in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. His research interests focus on viral liver diseases, including hepatitis B and C. Dr. Fung is also the Director of Education for the Toronto Centre for Liver Disease, Francis Family Liver Clinic.

Needs Assessment on the Future of Hepatitis B Care

You are invited to participate in a needs assessment focused on the understanding and implementation of quantitative hepatitis B surface antigen (qHBsAg) testing. Your expertise and insights are essential to effectively address current clinical, logistical, and public health challenges associated with qHBsAg testing. The outcomes will be used to inform a series of regional workshops to ensure they directly address current needs and gaps in chronic hepatis B care, including the medical, logistical, and public health challenges associated with the introduction of qHBsAg testing. By participating, you will help shape the workshop curricula to directly address the needs and gaps in patient care and public health.

Please complete this survey to help address the needs and gaps in patient care and public health surrounding hepatitis B care. Your responses will remain confidential, and the survey will only take 5-10 minutes of your time.
