Honoring a Global Leader in Hepatology and Lifelong Advocate for Liver Health

“Professor Manns ensures that people live longer and better lives.” — Stephan Weil, Minister President of Lower Saxony
The Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver (CASL) joins the international hepatology community in mourning the loss of Professor Michael P. Manns, who passed away on August 15, 2025, at the age of 73.
Professor Manns was a visionary in hepatology, whose career spanned over four decades of transformative research, education, and leadership. As Director of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology at Hannover Medical School (MHH), he led pioneering work in viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver diseases, and transplantation.
His legacy includes the founding of Hep-Net, Germany’s national hepatitis network, and the German Liver Foundation, both of which continue to shape liver research and policy. Professor Manns also served as President of MHH, guiding the institution through the COVID-19 pandemic and spearheading its evolution into a comprehensive health science campus.
His leadership as Chair of the International Symposium on Viral Hepatitis and Liver Disease (ISVHLD) and the Global Hepatitis Summit united experts from around the world, fostering collaboration and accelerating progress in the fight against viral hepatitis.
Internationally, he held leadership roles in UEG, EASL, and other major societies, earning accolades such as the UEG Lifetime Achievement Award and the EASL Recognition Award.
Professor Manns’ influence extended deeply into Canadian hepatology through his mentorship, collaborative spirit, and scientific contributions. His work has inspired generations of liver specialists, including many within our CASL community.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of working with him. His legacy will continue to guide our mission and the future of liver health.
